ABOUT OUR SHELTER PARTNER

The King William Regional Animal Shelter is an open-intake facility serving the communities of King William and King & Queen Counties.

As an open-intake shelter, they accept animals from local residents who are no longer able to care for their pets, as well as stray dogs and cats found within those jurisdictions. This means their doors remain open to animals who need a safe place to land — regardless of circumstance.

The shelter provides daily care, medical attention, enrichment, and support while working to reunite lost pets with their families or place them into loving adoptive homes. Their role in the community is essential, ensuring that animals have protection, compassion, and a pathway forward when they need it most.

Why Ashley Fosters

"I foster because dogs like Twist deserve more.

Twist came from neglect. She had been starved. Her back had healed incorrectly after it was broken. She lived with neurological challenges no dog should have to face. She was scheduled to be transferred out, and I couldn’t let her story end that way — so I adopted her.

And despite everything she had endured, she was the happiest soul I’ve ever known.

Twist showed me what resilience truly looks like. She showed me how deeply a second chance can matter. Her body eventually failed because of her spinal condition, but her spirit never did. She loved life. And she was deeply loved in return.

Now I foster to give other dogs that same chance.

The overlooked ones. The misunderstood ones. The ones labeled “too much.”

Fostering is my way of saying: your past does not decide your future. In my home, they find safety. Stability. Patience. Love.

Twist received her second chance.

Why Erica Fosters

"I foster because I’ve always believed shelter dogs deserve to be seen.

I grew up loving animals, but my connection to shelter dogs started early. When I was in second grade, my mom took me to Spotsylvania Animal Shelter, and that’s where we adopted my first dog, Lucky. I still remember standing there, looking at all the dogs we couldn’t take home, and feeling like I was leaving pieces of my heart behind. That feeling never really left me.

Shelter dogs have stayed with me ever since.

There’s something about them—the ones waiting, the ones overlooked, the ones who don’t immediately get chosen—that has always pulled at me. I couldn’t stop thinking about them, and eventually, I realized I didn’t have to just think about them. I could help them.

So I started fostering.

And I’ve never looked back.

Fostering is one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever done. Watching a dog start to trust again, seeing their body relax, seeing them realize they’re safe—it’s hard to put into words what that feels like. Those moments matter. They stay with you.

I also stay closely involved with the shelter beyond fostering—posting adoptables, helping with transport, taking on shy and medical cases, and stepping in wherever I’m needed. It all ties back to the same goal: giving dogs a chance to be seen and supported while they wait for their person.

Because that’s what this is really about.

Helping one dog might not seem like much. But to that dog, it changes everything.
